The Current Era
2026 figures after Round 18, the United States Grand Prix.
Williams are ninth on 12 points, with Carlos Sainz on 7 and Alexander Albon on 5. Under James Vowles the team has been open that its recovery is a long project built on infrastructure rather than short-term results — much of the operation was still running on spreadsheets when he arrived. The 2026 regulations were always the target rather than the seasons before them.
History
Origins, eras and the people who shaped them.
Frank Williams had run cars under other names through the 1970s before founding Williams Grand Prix Engineering with the engineer Patrick Head in 1977. Clay Regazzoni won the team's first race at Silverstone in 1979; Alan Jones took the drivers' title in 1980.
Through the 1980s and 1990s Williams was the most technically aggressive team in the sport, and for stretches the fastest. Its cars carried Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve to championships, and pioneered active suspension, semi-automatic gearboxes and traction control — several of which were promptly banned.
Frank Williams was paralysed in a car accident in 1986 and ran the team from a wheelchair for the next thirty-five years. Ayrton Senna was killed driving a Williams at Imola in 1994. The family sold the team to Dorilton Capital in 2020; Frank Williams died in 2021. The team's seventh drivers' title, Villeneuve's in 1997, remains its last.
