Overview

Zinedine Zidane combined the touch of a much smaller player with the physique of a centre-back. The roulette turn was his signature, but what set him apart was the calm — he seemed to have more time on the ball than anyone around him.

He scored twice in the 1998 World Cup final as France won it at home, and his volley from the edge of the area in the 2002 Champions League final is among the most replayed goals ever scored. He was sent off in his last professional match, the 2006 World Cup final, for headbutting Marco Materazzi, and still won the tournament's Golden Ball. He later managed Real Madrid to three consecutive Champions League titles.
