Overview
Michel Platini won the Ballon d'Or three years running, a feat matched only by Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten. A deep-lying attacking midfielder who scored like a forward, he was the finest free-kick taker of his generation.
His Euro 1984 is the most dominant individual performance in the tournament's history: nine goals in five matches, including two hat-tricks, as France won their first major trophy at home. He later became president of UEFA before being banned from football administration in 2015 over a payment from FIFA.
