Overview
Ronaldo — O Fenômeno — was for a few years around 1997 the most frightening attacking player football had seen: a striker with a sprinter's pace, a dribbler's control at that pace, and finishing that did not deteriorate under either. He won the Ballon d'Or at twenty-one.
Two ruptures of the same knee tendon cost him almost three seasons and permanently changed how he played. He came back to score both goals in the 2002 World Cup final against Germany and finished as the tournament's top scorer, and his fifteen World Cup goals stood as the record until Miroslav Klose passed him in 2014.
