Overview
Gary Lineker won the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup with six goals and scored 48 for England, one short of Bobby Charlton's record at the time. He was a pure penalty-box finisher who did very little else on the pitch and did that one thing exceptionally well.
He was never booked in a professional career of more than sixteen years — a record no other leading forward comes close to. He became the BBC's principal football presenter after retiring and hosted Match of the Day for more than two decades.
