Overview
Bobby Charlton survived the Munich air disaster of 1958, which killed eight of his Manchester United teammates, and spent the following decade rebuilding the club with Matt Busby. He scored both goals in the 1966 World Cup semi-final and was named European Footballer of the Year that year.
Ten years after Munich he captained United to the European Cup and scored twice in the final at Wembley. He was England's record scorer with 49 goals for almost fifty years until Wayne Rooney passed him, and Manchester United's record scorer until Rooney did the same.
