Overview
Bobby Moore captained England to their only World Cup, in 1966, and is the standard against which English defenders are still measured. He was not quick and not especially strong in the air; he read the game faster than anyone else on the pitch and tackled with a precision that made contact almost unnecessary.
His performance against Brazil in the 1970 group stage, and the tackle on Jairzinho in particular, is often called the finest defensive display ever recorded. Pelé called him the greatest defender he ever played against. He died of cancer at 51; a statue of him stands outside Wembley.
