How It Ended
Final years and legacy.
BRM's last race was in 1977. The team had been in decline for most of the decade and closed with none of the standing it held in the early 1960s.
History
Origins, eras and the people who shaped them.
British Racing Motors was founded as a national project — a British team, with a British engine, to beat the Italians. Its early years were close to farcical: the V16 engine of the early 1950s was extraordinarily powerful, almost undriveable, and unreliable enough to make the whole enterprise a national embarrassment.
The team came good in 1962, when Graham Hill won the drivers' championship and BRM the constructors'. It stayed competitive through the mid-1960s and produced the H16 engine, another over-ambitious design that won only once, in a Lotus at Watkins Glen in 1966.
BRM won its last race at Monaco in 1972 with Jean-Pierre Beltoise, in the wet. The team folded five years later.
