Overview
Virgil van Dijk's £75 million transfer to Liverpool in January 2018 was then a world record for a defender and is widely regarded as the signing that turned the club into champions of Europe and England within eighteen months.
He was named UEFA Men's Player of the Year in 2019 and finished second in the Ballon d'Or voting, the highest placing by a defender since Fabio Cannavaro won it in 2006. He captains both Liverpool and the Netherlands.
