Overview

René Higuita invented the scorpion kick, clearing a Jamie Redknapp shot at Wembley in 1995 by diving forward and heeling the ball over his own head with both feet. It remains the most famous single act by any goalkeeper.

He played as a sweeper-keeper decades before the term was common, roaming far outside his area to join attacks — a habit that cost Colombia a goal against Cameroon at the 1990 World Cup. He also took free kicks and penalties, scoring three international goals.
