Career
Championship years: 1978.
Andretti is the only person to have won the Formula One World Championship, the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500, and one of only two to have won titles in Formula One and American open-wheel racing.
He emigrated from Italy to Pennsylvania at fifteen, having spent part of his childhood in a displaced-persons camp, and reached Formula One in 1968 by taking pole position on his debut at Watkins Glen.
His championship came with Lotus in 1978, in the ground-effect Type 79 — the car that made every other design on the grid obsolete. He won six races that season. The title was settled at Monza on the day his team-mate Ronnie Peterson was fatally injured in a first-lap accident, and Andretti said afterwards that motor racing had taken more than it gave.
