Overview
Lucas Radebe captained both Leeds United and South Africa and was known at Elland Road as The Chief. Nelson Mandela described him as his hero; he received the FIFA Fair Play Award in 2000 for his work against racism.
He survived being shot in the back in Soweto in 1991. He won the Africa Cup of Nations with South Africa in 1996, two years after the end of apartheid and the country's return to international football.
