Overview
Lothar Matthäus holds the record for World Cup appearances with 25 across five tournaments, and won 150 caps for West Germany and Germany. He captained the side that won the 1990 World Cup and was named the first FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991.
He played as a driving box-to-box midfielder for most of his career and reinvented himself as a sweeper in his thirties, which is how he was still playing international football at 37. Diego Maradona named him the toughest opponent he ever faced.
