Overview
Gerd Müller scored 68 goals in 62 internationals — a ratio no player of the modern era approaches — and 365 in the Bundesliga, a record that stood for fifty years until Robert Lewandowski matched his 40-goal season in 2021.
Short, thick-legged and unspectacular to watch, he was extraordinary inside the six-yard box: his turning speed in tight space and his ability to shoot off balance produced goals that looked accidental and were not. He scored the winner in the 1974 World Cup final and then retired from international football at twenty-eight.
