Career

Championship years: 1963, 1965.

Clark drove for Colin Chapman's Lotus for his entire Formula One career, and took twenty-five wins from seventy-two starts. In 1963 he won seven of the ten championship rounds. He led 71 per cent of all the laps he ran in his title years.

He also won the Indianapolis 500 in 1965, in a rear-engined Lotus, at a race that had been the property of front-engined roadsters for decades. He won the Indy 500 and the Formula One championship in the same year.

Clark was killed in a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim in April 1968, most probably from a tyre failure. The reaction in the paddock was less grief than disbelief: he was widely held to be the driver least likely to crash.
