Career

Championship years: 2009.

Button spent nine seasons without a championship-capable car, and was within days of having no drive at all when Honda withdrew at the end of 2008 and its team faced closure.

Ross Brawn bought the operation for a nominal sum, fitted a Mercedes engine, and the car that emerged had a double diffuser the rest of the grid had not thought of. Button won six of the first seven races and the championship. Brawn GP won both titles in its only season and was sold to Mercedes.

He moved to McLaren the following year as Lewis Hamilton's team-mate and out-scored him across their three seasons together.
