Career

Championship years: 1959, 1960, 1966.

Brabham won his first two championships with Cooper as the rear-engined revolution swept the front-engined Grand Prix car out of existence, then left to build his own cars.

In 1966 he won the drivers' championship in a Brabham — the only driver ever to take a title in a car bearing his own name, and a feat that requires him to have been simultaneously among the best drivers and among the better constructors of his era.

He was an engineer first and a driver second, and ran his team with Ron Tauranac as a serious manufacturing business. He was knighted in 1979.
