Overview
Twenty clubs competing for the Scudetto, in the league that made tactical defending an art form.
Serie A is the top division of Italian football. Twenty clubs play 38 matches from August to May; the champion wears the Scudetto, a small tricolour shield, on its shirt the following season, and the bottom three are relegated to Serie B.
Juventus have the most titles, followed by the two Milan clubs. Italian football's defensive tradition — catenaccio in the 1960s, and the zonal systems Arrigo Sacchi built at Milan in the late 1980s — has shaped coaching worldwide.

History
Italian club football dates to 1898, and the national round-robin to 1929. Serie A was the strongest league in the world through the late 1980s and 1990s, when Italian clubs could afford almost any player in Europe and won the European Cup and UEFA Cup repeatedly.
The 2006 Calciopoli scandal, in which Juventus and others were found to have influenced referee appointments, cost Juventus two titles and a season in Serie B, and marked the beginning of a decline in the league's finances relative to England and Spain.
The league has recovered competitively in the 2020s — five different champions in six seasons — and Inter won their 21st Scudetto in 2025–26 with 87 points.
Governance
Lega Serie A administers the league on behalf of its clubs, under the Italian Football Federation, UEFA and FIFA.
