Overview

Twenty clubs, and the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona that shapes the Spanish season.

LaLiga is the top division of Spanish football. Twenty clubs play 38 matches from August to May in a straight league with no playoff, with the bottom three relegated to LaLiga Hypermotion.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have won more than two-thirds of all titles between them, and El Clásico is the most watched club fixture in the world. Atlético Madrid have broken the duopoly eleven times, most recently in 2021; Athletic Club and Real Sociedad play with squads drawn largely from the Basque Country.

History

The Spanish league began in 1929 with ten clubs. Real Madrid's dominance was built in the 1950s on the five consecutive European Cups won by a side containing Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás; Barcelona's came later, on the youth academy at La Masia that produced Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and Lionel Messi.

Messi spent seventeen seasons in the first team and scored 474 league goals, a record that will stand for a long time. Spanish clubs have won the Champions League more often than those of any other country, and Sevilla have won the Europa League seven times.

Barcelona secured the 2025–26 title with three matches to spare, beating Real Madrid 2–0 in May 2026 to finish on 94 points.
