Overview

Twenty clubs, a straight round-robin from April to December, and the deepest talent pool in world football.

The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A is the top division of Brazilian football. Twenty clubs play 38 matches from April to December in a straight round-robin, with no playoff and the bottom four relegated — a format adopted in 2003 after decades of experimentation.

It runs alongside the state championships in the first months of the year, the Copa do Brasil, and the Copa Libertadores, which makes the Brazilian calendar the most congested in world football. The league is the primary supplier of players to Europe.

History

A national championship was first contested in 1959 and took its current name and format in 1971; the round-robin without playoff was adopted in 2003. Palmeiras have the most titles, ahead of Santos, Flamengo and Corinthians.

Brazilian clubs have won the Copa Libertadores in most recent seasons, funded partly by the transfer market and partly by a shift to corporate ownership — clubs may now convert to SAF companies, a change that has brought outside investment to Botafogo, Cruzeiro and Vasco da Gama.

The league's historical significance is inseparable from the players it produced: Pelé at Santos, Zico at Flamengo, Sócrates at Corinthians, Ronaldo at Cruzeiro, Neymar at Santos.
